About the challenge

NVE, in collaboration with Sunnfjord Municipality, will look at possible measures that can prevent flood damage in the Gaular River Basin. The feasibility study will form the basis for later prioritization and possible planning of measures, based on socio-economic benefit.

In October 2014, several watercourses in Western Norway were exposed to damaging floods. The flood in Gaular was the largest recorded at the Viksvatn monitoring station in the period 1903 to 2022. The flood caused extensive damage to settlements and infrastructure. NVE, in collaboration with Sunnfjord Municipality, will look at possible measures that can prevent flood damage in the Gaular River Basin.

The assignment includes mapping the existing situation, flood hazard mapping, assessment of aquatic and terrestrial environmental values, landscape adaptation and investigation of comprehensive security alternatives for the river basin. A description of all measures at a general level is prepared, with recommendations for the most relevant measures, as well as a cost-benefit assessment of the measures. The feasibility study will form the basis for later prioritization and possible planning of measures, based on socio-economic benefit.
