Preliminary project
LINK Arkitektur, WSP and Multiconsult have collaborated on a plan proposal for area regulation for Fjordbyen on Lierstranda, and detailed regulation for Gilhusbukta east of Fjordbyen. The plan facilitates the transformation of an industrial area into a vibrant fjord city with 700,000 m2 of housing, 200,000 m2 of industry and 40,000 m2 of public buildings that will accommodate 16,000 residents and 16,000 jobs.
Fjordbyen will function as an extension of Drammen and become a new, important hub in Lier. The emphasis is on urban development with a zero vision for greenhouse gas emissions, with environmentally friendly transport solutions that are adapted for walking, cycling and public transport. The development of Fjordbyen Lier–Drammen is the largest ongoing urban development project in Norway.
The assignment aims to become a model project for sustainable urban development at an international level. The fjord town will be attractive, urban and sustainable – a place where people, fjord and future meet. The fjord town will help to manage future population growth in the Drammen area and will give the waterfront back to the residents.
The plan proposal is made on the premises of soft road users and is planned in line with the UN's sustainable development goals. Public transport, recreational areas, blue-green factor, canals without motorized traffic, squares and access to the fjord are central elements in the plan.
